Ireland and Argentina Through Memory, Literature, and Cultural Exchange

About the event

The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies at Trinity College Dublin and the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Maynooth University are delighted to present this symposium revisiting the legacy of Argentinian writer and investigative journalist Rodolfo Walsh (1927–1977).

Taking Walsh's life, work, and Irish heritage as a point of departure, the symposium brings together perspectives from Argentina and Ireland to explore questions of memory, literature, translation, and cultural exchange.

Keynote speakers

Jorge Fondebrider

Jorge Fondebrider is a prolific Argentine writer, poet, and literary translator. His recent books include Dublín (2019), La suerte que nos toca (2022), and Una traducción de París (2023). He has translated extensively from French and English, including works by Irish writers such as Peter Sirr and Moya Cannon, and has directed the Club de Traductores Literarios de Buenos Aires since 2009.

His keynote, “Literatura irlandesa en Argentina y literatura argentina en Irlanda: una relación desigual” ["Irish literature in Argentina and Argentine literature in Ireland: an unequal relationship"], will examine the publication and circulation of translations between the two countries and the inequalities shaping this literary exchange.

Sarah O’Brien

Sarah O’Brien is an oral and cultural historian, and Co-Director of the Oral History Centre in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Her books include Of Memory and the Misplaced: Irish Immigrant Life Writing in the United States (Indiana University Press, 2024) and The Irish in Argentina: Linguistic Disaporas, Narrative and Performance (Palgrave, 2017).

Her keynote, “But where is Rodolfo? Locating Walsh in Irish-Argentine Memory,” will draw on her oral-history research to consider Walsh’s place in the collective memory of the Irish community in Argentina.

This symposium will be held in a hybrid format. Online participants will receive the relevant link shortly before the event.

Presentations will be delivered in either English or Spanish.
