Join our three day Summer School for adults 'Threads of Care - Beyond the Gallery' at the HLG studio in the Sean O’Casey Community Centre, East Wall; and the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square. With artists Eithne Jordan, Eimear Murphy, Angela Monks McDonagh, Roxanna Manouchehri and more.

This year’s Summer School 'Threads of Care - Beyond the Gallery' sees the gallery in a state of closure for refurbishment, but the functionality of the museum is ongoing. The Summer School’s attention will focus on HLG’s collection and the artistic practices of selected artists whose work is in our collection, through the lens of care and nurturing. Often explored by female artists through subjects such as the body, materiality, motherhood and domestic life, care extends beyond the personal to shape our relationships with one another, our communities and the spaces we inhabit. Through conversation, shared learning and art activities; we examine how artistic practices can foster connection, support and belonging and how acts of care can become a vital force in shaping cultural and civic life.

The Summer School takes place at Sean O'Casey Community Centre, East Wall and the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square.

No experience necessary and materials are provided.

Thursday 13 August, at the Sean O'Casey Community Centre

10.15: Welcome registration with HLG Education curator Cleo Fagan

10.30 - 11.30: VTS Session on Daphne Wright’s Primate (25 minutes).

With art historian Dr Anne Cormican; followed by conversation with HLG Head of Education and Community Outreach Jessica O'Donnell

11.30 – 1: ‘Surface and Depth’ workshop

Join artist Angela Monks McDonagh for this immersive workshop as we explore the dual aspects of absence and presence, solid form set against the hollow space within and layering of materials and thinking. Taking inspiration from artist Daphne Wright’s deeply tactile approach to empathy, memory and science in her work Primate we will respond to this poignant sculpture using materials including delicate rice paper, thread, pen and wire.

Friday 14 August, at The National Gallery:

10 - 11: Tour of ‘Highlights of the Hugh Lane Gallery’ at the National Gallery.

The ‘Highlights from the Collection’ exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland presents a selection of outstanding works from the collections of Hugh Lane Gallery. This exhibition includes work by Mary Swanzy, Francis Bacon, Mainie Jellett and more.

11 - 1: ‘Attending to our creativity’ workshop

What thoughts do we choose to attend to, and how do we attend to them? In this collaborative workshop and tour with artist Eimear Murphy we will use mixed media to explore what happens when we attend to our creative curiosities. Much like the female figure carefully nurtures her fire with dry leaves in Frank Joseph O'Meara, Towards Night and Winter, through practical art making and discussion we will explore what it means to nurture inspiration and wonder against the backdrop of lives with so many other caring responsibilities

Saturday 15 August, at the Sean O'Casey Community Centre

10 - 12.30: ‘Paints and Pigments’ workshop

In this practical workshop with artist Roxanna Manoucherhi participants will make their own paint out of organic pigments, exploring a variety of materials including egg tempera, gauche and gum Arabic mix.

12.30 - 1.30: Lunch break

1.30 - 4: ‘Small Painting, the journey from source to the image’ – talk and workshop

In this talk and workshop with artist Eithne Jordan, participants will explore the journey from source material to the painted image; investigating surface, composition, light and scale. Each participant should bring some source material to work from - a colour photo printed on ordinary paper would work. This would ideally be a photo taken by the participant, of some subject/image that has interested them.
