The Durham Centre will host a workshop titled 'AI in Primary Care: From Curiosity to Confident Adoption' on 2 February 2027. The session will explore the impact of AI on primary care, focusing on ambient voice technology and workflow automation. Attendance is free.
Discover how AI can transform primary care through ambient voice technology, triage and workflow automation.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging across primary care, creating new opportunities to improve productivity, release clinical time and support workforce sustainability. From ambient voice technology and AI-enabled triage to workflow automation and decision-support tools, practices are increasingly exploring how AI can support the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care.
This one-day event will bring together GPs, primary care leaders, practice teams and system partners from across the North East and North Cumbria to explore the practical realities of adopting AI in primary care.
Designed for colleagues with varying levels of knowledge and experience, the event will provide a balanced and evidence-informed view of the opportunities, challenges and considerations involved in AI adoption. Through expert presentations, practical examples, panel discussions and shared learning, attendees will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to assess technologies responsibly and make informed decisions for their organisations.
The event will also provide an opportunity to shape future regional support, collaboration and resources to ensure AI adoption benefits patients, staff and local communities.
Why attend?
AI is already entering primary care, both formally and informally. However, confidence, understanding and approaches to adoption vary considerably across organisations.
Many primary care teams have identified challenges around:
Understanding the rapidly evolving AI landscape
Selecting appropriate suppliers and technologies
Information governance and data protection
Clinical safety requirements
Cyber security considerations
Procurement and implementation
Professional accountability and liability
Evaluating impact and value
Without shared learning and support, implementation risks becoming fragmented, inconsistent and inequitable.
This event has been developed in response to growing interest from primary care teams, findings from Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria's Ambient Voice Technology Survey, and increasing demand for practical guidance on AI technologies beyond ambient voice tools.
What will you learn?
The event will explore:
Ambient Voice Technology (AVT)
AI-enabled triage and patient access solutions
Workflow automation and administrative efficiencies
Clinical safety and governance requirements
Information governance and cyber security
Ethics, regulation and responsible AI use
Procurement, implementation and evaluation
Real-world examples from primary care organisations
Future opportunities for collaboration across the region
Who Should Attend?
This event is aimed at GPs, primary care teams, Practice Managers, PCN leaders, GP Federations, digital and transformation leads, information governance and clinical safety professionals, and ICB colleagues involved in primary care, digital transformation and innovation. It is suitable for anyone interested in understanding, evaluating or implementing AI within primary care services.
Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
Understand the potential of AI to improve workforce capacity and administrative efficiency
Observe practical examples of AI being used within healthcare settings
Identify opportunities to improve quality, productivity and patient care within their own organisation
Recognise the risks and limitations associated with AI technologies
Understand the principles of safe, responsible and accountable AI adoption
Learn from peers and share experiences across primary care networks
Identify practical next steps for testing or implementing AI solutions locally
Join the conversation
Whether you are just beginning to explore AI or are already evaluating solutions within your organisation, this event will provide practical insight, expert guidance and valuable networking opportunities to help you move from curiosity to confident adoption.
The Bright Ideas in Health Awards is now celebrating its 20th year. The Awards are organised by Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria (HI NENC).
The Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams working within the NHS, including those in primary and secondary care, universities, voluntary and community sector organisations, regional businesses and organisations working within the health sector. Entrants will have risen to the challenge of telling us how, and where, they believe that the services provided to patients can be improved, either through a technical innovation or through better service delivery.
Everyone can play a part in developing innovative solutions to the healthcare challenges that we face every day. The competition, depending upon the category, is open to the groups stated in the North East of England and North Cumbria.
