Durham Cathedral Museum will open its doors in Durham, featuring the Monks’ Dormitory with its well-preserved 15th-century oak roof. Visitors can explore this significant historical exhibition, with admission starting from £0.

Begin your Museum journey in the Monks’ Dormitory with its immaculately preserved 15 th century oak roof. The room is now home to the Cathedral’s stone collection which tell the story of Christianity in England and include a stunning 19 th century plaster cast of the Ruthwell Cross. The Collections Gallery is our temporary exhibition space used for three changing displays each year. Until November 1 st 2026 you can see Living Stones: Archaeology at Durham Cathedral featuring a 13 th century enamelled crucifix found at the site of the Battle of Neville’s Cross. Downstairs in the Great Kitchen are the Treasures of St Cuthbert, the most precious objects in our collection. Alongside the famous Pectoral Cross is the 7 th century wooden coffin made for Cuthbert and used to carry his body throughout the north-east as his community fled Viking invaders.
