Join storyteller and folklorist Jon Norman Mason for a talk at The Mint House
Sussex folk of times past knew that they were not alone in the landscape: fairy beings and spirits were all around, interfering with our lives for good or ill. Tales of these mysterious neighbours show us the hopes and anxieties of the people who told them: clean and orderly homes, the wellbeing of the farm, and dangerous shadows in wild places... But have we totally left such stories behind? Join storyteller and folklorist Jon Norman Mason for a stroll through local folklore past and present, revealing the magical beings that continue to express our joys and fears to this day. Call it tradition or superstition, it's still the stories that shape our lives.
Jon Norman Mason is a professional storyteller, folklorist and cultural historian. He specialises in how imagination is used to make sense of the world; how stories relate to landscape and place; and how they shape, and are shaped by, the times they are told in. He has taught at the Universities of Brighton, Sussex, and at Brighton and Sussex Medical School; created storytelling for Brighton Festival, Butser Ancient Farm and more; and been researcher/writer for over four series of award-winning BBC comedy history podcast You're Dead To Me.
