Join us for a playful session where we explore setting up and building confidence for arm balances
About the event
Join Meg (she/they) and Adri (they/them) for a playful and supportive exploration of arm balances!
This workshop is for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community who is curious about arm balances - whether you are completely new to them, already practicing, or just fancy having a play and trying something new.
We will explore some of the foundations behind most arm balances, including how to safely set yourself up, shift your weight and what muscles to use to help your strength and confidence. We'll also look at ways to use props for support and explore different variations. You will have the chance to try things out, ask questions and find options that work for your body. You don't need to be able to do any arm balances already - this will be a space for exploration and play.
This is a zero-tolerance space for transphobia, homophobia, racism, ableism, body shaming, or any other discriminatory or harmful behaviour.
What to expect
12:00 - Welcome & Introduction to Arm-Balances
12:15 - Warm-up Flow
12:45 - Crow (Kakasana) Exploration
13:00- Rest & Reset
13:10 - Other Arm Balances Exploration
13:30 - Restorative Cool Down
Access
Our practice will be taking place on the floor, so we suggest to join you should be able to get yourself up and down from a mat. Chairs are available if you would like to use them as a prop. Just get in touch before class at queeryogaedinburgh@gmail.com (https://httpsqueeryogaedinburgh@gmail.com) so the teachers can be prepared.
Please note that the studio is not wheelchair accessible. Access is via a staircase of 16 steps and landing with a handrail.
If you're unsure whether a class will meet your access needs, or you have any other questions about the practice, please get in touch at queeryogaedinburgh@gmail.com (https://queeryogaedinburgh@gmail.com). We're happy to help.
Refunds
Refunds are eligible up to 24 hours before class start time - we will struggle to fill your space with short notice. If you are unable to make a class and are willing to offer your ticket to someone else please feel free to email us or share on our Whatsapp community.
Venue and getting here
We will be holding the session at Collective Space on 21 Albert Street in Leith. There are bus links close to the studio for buses 1, 14, 35, N35, 13 and a tram line nearby. There is some on street parking around the area.
The studio is on the lower ground floor of Collective Space Venue. The venue entrance is step-free, with a door width of 125cm. To reach the studio, go through the door on the back wall of the main ground floor space (80cm wide) to the staircase. The staircase has 16 steps (15cm each) with handrails on both sides and a midway landing, where there is a fire exit to the side. At the bottom of the staircase, go through another door (80cm wide). The studio is on the right through the door (width 75cm).There is no step-free access to the studio, so it is not wheelchair accessible.
Toilets:
Ground floor: a wheelchair accessible gender-neutral toilet with grabrails (door width 85cm).
Studio Lower Ground floor: two gender-neutral toilets (door width 75cm each) no grabrails.
When arriving at the building the front door should be open with someone to welcome you and direct you to the space.
What to bring
Mats, blocks, and other yoga props will be provided. We suggest you wear comfy clothes you can freely move in (joggers, shorts, T-shirts etc). You are welcome to bring a water bottle if you'd like, plus any other item you'd like to use with you during class. There will be a tap for refills and a kettle for hot drinks.
Sensory information
Because the studio is on the lower ground floor, you may hear people passing on the upper floor or in the courtyard outside.
Windows overlook the internal courtyard, so daytime classes are naturally lit, and evening classes have warm, low lighting.
If you have any questions at all, please get in touch. Hope to see you there!
