A botanical linocutting course takes place at Birchwood Art Studio. Participants use Japanese plywood and traditional lino to explore various mark-making techniques.
During this course, participants will explore a range of mark-making techniques using Japanese plywood and traditional lino. Inspired by the textures and patterns found in nature, you'll learn how to use cutting gouges to carve your own printing blocks and create unique relief prints. Participants will experiment with reduction and multi-block printing methods, using layers of colour to create a striking two-colour print. Working with A5-sized blocks, you'll be introduced to a simple registration method and guided through the entire process, from transferring an image onto your block to carving and hand-printing using barens and spoons. You'll explore how different carving marks, colour combinations, and printing surfaces can transform your images, printing onto a selection of coloured papers to enhance the final result. Please bring a sketch, drawing, or simple digital printout (maximum A5 size) to work from, or choose from our collection of reference images. Leaves, flowers, landscapes, insects, and other natural forms make excellent starting points, but all ideas are welcome! Anupa has an MA in illustration from Edinburgh College of Art and can be often found teaching there, exhibiting her work or creating from her Custom House Studio. She has a calm and supportive nature and encourages students to find their own style and enjoy the process. All levels welcome from complete beginners to those who want to refine techniques they already have. Feel free to choose your own theme or follow Anupa’s suggestions. All materials and refreshments are included in the course fee.
