ERASURE: Drawing Out Of Darkness is a drawing workshop taking place on 1 November 2026 at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Led by artist Jules Bradbury, the session focuses on the use of charcoal as a versatile drawing material, allowing participants to explore mark-making techniques through various playful exercises. Inspired by Frank Auerbach’s Charcoal Heads, we’ll look at the particular qualities of charcoal – a versatile drawing material that enable forms to emerge out of the darkness. Echoing Auerbach’s technique, we’ll construct/deconstruct our drawing in order to observe/learn selectiveness in our mark-making. Charcoal is one of the simplest, most sustainable elements to draw with and perhaps one of the most accessible to grasp. In this session, we will be working with charcoal in various forms (block, stick, pencil, powder), undertaking a series of playful drawing exercises that consider erasure as a drawing technique. Come and explore drawing with charcoal in our relaxed Sunday afternoon session led by artist Jules Bradbury.
