A knowledge exchange event connecting research and practice for urban nature-based solutions in Scotland

This two-day meeting brings together researchers and practitioners to reflect on the successes and challenges of implementing nature-based solutions (NbS) in urban Scotland over recent years. Through discussion, facilitated knowledge exchange and hands-on workshops, participants will identify key evidence and implementation gaps, shape priorities for future research and action, and explore opportunities for collaboration to grow healthy, connected urban ecosystems.

Day One - Monday 26th October

Session 1: Nature-based Solutions for our towns and cities

This morning session will explore how NbS has been integrated into Scotland's urban environment over the last five years. What has worked? What have we learned? And what can we do better? Plenary speakers will bring national perspectives across policy, practice and academia, followed by case studies from across Scotland's major urban areas.

Lunch and Learn with Scotland's NbS Hub

Join the launch of Scotland's NbS Hub's new Lunch & Learn series with Dr Husam al Waer (University of Dundee).

Session 2: Themed Workshops

Choose from three parallel workshops, each exploring a key theme within the Plants with Purpose programme through site visits, case studies, and facilitated knowledge-exchange activities.

Planting for Pollinators: Building a biome-positive city from the ground up

Working with Water: Restoring the water cycle in our towns and cities

Seeing the Trees: Designing an Urban Forest Observatory for Scotland

Day Two - Tuesday 27th October

Session 3: Connecting for Best Practice

Thematic workshop groups will present priority actions and evidence gaps, followed by facilitated discussion to develop shared best practice guidance for advancing urban NbS across Scotland.

Session 4: Cross-cutting Themes

The final session explores themes critical to progressing NbS in Scotland. Talks will be focused on community engagement, private-sector involvement, the role of botanic gardens, and the importance of horticulture.

The event will conclude with a closing plenary speaker.
