Welcome to the Portobello Mermaid Pop-Up, by the Edinburgh and Lothians Mermaid Society (est. 2022).

Sunday 30th August, 2-3pm, on the sand facing the Swim Centre.

Whether you're a mermaid enthusiast, or looking for something fun to do with children, this event is for you!

What to expect: A small group of merfolk will be on the beach from 2-3pm if you want to come and "sea" us, have a chat or share a song, take some pictures of us or grab a "shell-fie" (merfolk love being photographed!). Weather dependent, there may be a short swimming demonstration at the conclusion of the event.

Important Information:

This event remains free, but we will have the option to donate a gold coin to Marine Conservation Society- any cash donations will be gratefully received.

There will be a queue in place at one end of the line of merfolk. Please meet and mingle with the merfolk by moving along the line. If you wish to spend more time with the merfolk, please rejoin the queue before seeing us again.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN: Please don't come before 2 or stay after 3 if you wish to keep the magic alive (merfolk will be transforming, ie changing in and out of tails on the beach). Children must be supervised at all times. Particularly watch children closely when we swim, as children have previously attempted to follow us into the sea!

ADULTS: Please be mindful of asking questions about our tails/ mermaiding in the presence of children who believe we are real mermaids- adults interested in joining the society can do so by contacting: https://thelothianmermaid.co.uk/mermaidsociety

Accessibility: the joy of mermaiding is for everyone. In the current climate, we extend a special welcome to disabled, LGBTQ+ and POC mermaid fans. Wheelchair users can access the event by booking a free Portobello Beach Wheelchair, collected from the shipping container outside Tumbles (please book ahead with them to avoid disappointment). We have a mermaid with conversational British Sign Language and intermediate Scottish Gaelic. If you need further information or assistance, please contact us ahead of the event, or talk to the MERMAID WRANGLER in the purple high vis vest on the day.

As this event is both weather and sea dependent, the appearance or just the swim portion may be postponed or cancelled at short notice if conditions are unsafe for mermaiding (heavy rain, rough seas, local pollution etc.)
