Our Halloween nightmare is invasive species!
Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish Project is working to protect the UK’s only native freshwater crayfish species, the white-clawed crayfish, which remains in just two rivers in Devon, with one of these locations being the river Creedy, passing through Quicke’s Home Farm.
As part of the project, the Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish (SDNC) team have been surveying Devon’s rivers to assess the presence of globally endangered white-clawed crayfish and invasive American signal crayfish which are a leading cause in their decline.
White-clawed crayfish have been rescued from these threatened populations and transported to a crayfish hatchery at Wildwood Devon to breed and be released into safe ‘ark sites’ where there are no signal crayfish.
Join SDNC staff from Wildwood Trust for a guided walk from Quicke’s Home Farm down to the river, to learn more about the crayfish conservation project, how we survey the river for crayfish, and take part in an invertebrate river dipping session to assess the river’s biodiversity. We may even find some crayfish!
Following the river session, we will return to visit Quicke’s Cheese Shop and sample a selection of cheeses.
This event is suitable for families but all children will need to be carefully supervised by an adult.
Please note there is around a 20-minute walk to the river and back again with some uneven ground.
You will need to bring wellies for standing in the river. This event will be weather dependent.
