An overview for VCSE organisations of the core policies and governance responsibilities required to operate safely, legally and effectively
Please note: funding of this session is available to VCSE organisations working within East Devon ONLY.
This bitesize session will give VCSE organisations and community groups a clear overview of the core policies and governance responsibilities they need in place to operate safely, legally and effectively. We’ll look at essential documents such as safeguarding, whistleblowing, health and safety, data protection, volunteering, and financial controls, along with simple checklists to help groups understand what’s required, why it matters, and how to keep policies up to date.
The session is designed to be practical and confidence‑building, helping organisations strengthen their governance without unnecessary jargon or complexity.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Identify the essential governance policies all community groups and charities should have in place.
Understand the purpose of key policies such as safeguarding, whistleblowing, health and safety, data protection, and volunteer management.
Recognise the legal and regulatory responsibilities of trustees, committees, and organisational leaders.
Use simple checklists to assess their organisation’s current governance strengths and gaps.
Plan next steps for updating or developing policies in a proportionate and practical way.
