About This Event

Understanding Sensory Processing Differences in Autistic Pupils is scheduled for 30 June 2027 at Countess Wear Community School in Exeter. This workshop will focus on how autistic pupils process sensory information and provide strategies for support in educational settings.

Explore how autistic pupils experience sensory information and discover practical strategies to support their needs in school.

For autistic children and young people, everyday sensory experiences can have a significant impact on their wellbeing, behaviour and ability to engage in learning.

This session will explore how autistic pupils experience and process sensory information, helping school staff better understand their individual needs and create more inclusive learning environments.

Participants will develop an understanding of the seven sensory systems and explore practical strategies to recognise and respond to sensory processing differences in primary and secondary settings.

What will the session cover?

Understanding sensory processing: Exploring the seven sensory systems – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, balance (vestibular) and body awareness (proprioception).

Recognising sensory needs: Identifying how sensory differences can affect behaviour, emotional regulation, communication and engagement in learning.

Creating supportive environments: Practical approaches to reducing sensory barriers and making classrooms more accessible.

Supporting individual pupils: Autism-informed strategies to respond to sensory needs and help pupils feel comfortable, regulated and ready to learn.

Participants will leave with a greater understanding of sensory processing differences and practical ideas to support autistic pupils in their own settings.

Who should attend?

SENCOs, teachers, teaching assistants, learning support staff and colleagues working with autistic children and young people in primary and secondary schools.
