The workshop on 2 December 2026 at Trongate 103 in Glasgow will focus on charcoal drawing techniques. Participants will explore various methods of using charcoal, including powder and natural sticks, while working with a live model. The session aims to encourage experimentation and creativity in drawing, guided by artist Alan Brash.
As a figurative painter I use charcoal to plan and sketch my compositions. It is one of the most versatile drawing materials there is. It can be delicate or dramatic, soft or bold, and it responds to a light touch as readily as a heavy hand. Build up marks and tone, then take them away again, and see how much an apparently simple material can do. We will work through enjoyable tasks to explore charcoal powder, liquid and natural sticks. We will look at how it handles different subjects, from objects to the human face, with a live model in the room. It is a chance to loosen up, experiment, and find effects you might not expect. Small class numbers, plenty of space to spread out, and a full day of drawing, all guided by Alan Brash M.Litt Fine Art Practice.
