Purchased by Glasgow Council in 1914, find out more about this forgotten Loch Lomond treasure with Fergus Sutherland.
Purchased by Glasgow Council in 1914, Balloch Castle and estate on Loch Lomond is one of our city’s forgotten treasures but currently has an uncertain future. Designed by Robert Lugar in 1808 for John Buchanan, a Glaswegian banker, merchant and industrialist, it is a key part of the picturesque movement and the gothic revival in Scotland and was a gateway to the Highlands for generations of Glaswegians who wanted to escape the grime and pollution of the great industrial city.
Fergus Sutherland originally trained as an archaeologist at Glasgow University but has spent most of the last four decades working as a heritage consultant and public historian. Although he has been involved in over four hundred projects throughout Britain, Europe and the Middle East, his primary love is the history of his adoptive city, Glasgow, the most fascinating place in the world (in his humble opinion!).
