A weekly Thursday evening of collective rest, beginning with a ‘material meditation’ using the weight and stillness of clay to slow the body down past thinking — toward the hypnagogic, drifting states of dreams space. Recent studies have revealed that clay can improve our ability to find connection and a deep sense of calm. Particular brain regions that process touch and coordinate the hands revealed that structured clay work that isn't related to making an object has been shown to lower cortisol (the stress hormone). Clay-specific studies show reductions in negative mood. Leading this course is Rhona W Paterson is a Glasgow-based artist, writer and material researcher who’s practice centres on clay and other earth materials as a tool for mindfulness, sensory thinking, and creating. A recipient of awards from Creative Scotland and The Scottish Book Trust for Poetry, Rhona’s sculptural work is held in the National Collection though her time as Associate Artist at The Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow.
