About This Event

A tour of Radical east end Glasgow Join Carolyn Wilson of Rebel Glasgow for a bike tour which will explore the history of Glasgow’s east end and the rapid industrialisation it underwent in the 19th century. We’ll also be learning about some of the Radicals who lived in the area at the time, and the reasons why they might have taken part in tearing down Harvie’s Dyke in June 1823, an act of direct action against a greedy landowner’s attempts to block access to the riverside path. We’ll meet at 2pm at Bridgeton Cross, under the umbrella (directly across the road from the railway station). We’ll move at a gentle pace, with lots of stops along the way, and finish at the site of Harvie’s Dyke. There you’ll have the opportunity to hear more about the results of the archaeological dig that’s been taking place all week, and the option of staying on to take part in (or watch others take part in) a community play that tells the story of Tam Harvie and his dyke. Most of the 3-mile route is flat and we’ll be making use of the riverside path (shared by cyclists and pedestrians) as well as a few quiet streets with minimal motorised traffic.
