Ensemble R6 invites audiences into a world of wit, colour, and lyrical beauty with a programme pairing two sparkling 20th-century masterpieces, at St Brides Church, Glasgow, at 7.30pm on Friday August 21st, and Stockbridge Parish Church, Edinburgh, at 6pm on Saturday 22nd August. Ibert - Divertissement Mahler (arr. Farrington) - Symphony No. 4 Conductor - Euan Kemp Soprano - Emily Kemp The first half features Jacques Ibert’s exuberant Divertissement - a theatrical work bursting with humour, elegance and playfulness, where pastiche textures and jazz-inflected rhythms conjure a whirlwind of entertainment. Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony, in a chamber-sized arrangement by Iain Farrington, occupies the rest of the programme. Exploring themes of life, death and innocent naivety, with Mozartian wit, grotesque orchestral writing and transcendental textures, Farrington’s pocket-sized reduction exposes the clarity of individual lines while retaining Mahler’s masterful orchestration. Ensemble R6 is an exciting new chamber ensemble formed of emerging professionals currently studying at the UK’s top music colleges and universities. We met through orchestral and chamber music as young musicians in Scotland and now continue to make music together. The ensemble tackles a wide vary of repertoire, from pocket-sized reductions of large symphonic works to original compositions for chamber ensemble.
