HND Acting present Her Naked Skin By Rebecca Lenkiewicz

When we first started working on Her Naked Skin, one of the things that struck me was just how long the fight for women’s suffrage had already been going on. By the time the play begins, women had been campaigning for the vote for almost fifty years.

Years of petitions, speeches and peaceful protest hadn’t brought the change many women were hoping for, and some campaigners had become much more militant.

It’s also easy to forget that not all men had the vote either. Voting rights were still restricted, so this was a period when people were really questioning who had a voice, who had power and who got to make decisions.

What interested me most was trying not to make the play too simple.

It isn’t just men against women, and it isn’t really about finding a good side and a bad side. The women don’t all agree with each other. They come from different classes, have different priorities and have very different views about how far they are prepared to go.

The men aren’t simply villains either. Some are defending a system they genuinely believe in, while others are acting out of fear, love, duty or a desire to protect someone.

And underneath all the politics, there are people trying to live their lives. There are marriages, friendships, attraction, class differences and people searching for freedom in very different ways.

That’s really what we’ve tried to hold on to in this production — everyone has a point of view, and everyone believes they have something worth fighting for.
