The Friends of Ramshorn Graveyard are pleased to announce the return of the ever popular Free Tour of the Ramshorn Graveyard. Situated on Ingram St. in the heart of the City Centre and opened in 1719 the Ramshorn Graveyard was the burial place of choice for the good and the great of the City including the Buchanans, the Glassfords and many other Tobacco Lords and Merchants whose mercantile activities helped Glasgow become the second City of the Empire. Predating the Necropolis by over 100 years the graveyard has witnessed the growth of Glasgow in the 18th Century and resting alongside the Merchants and Craftsmen are Lord Provosts, M.P.s, ministers and other notables including David Dale and John Anderson the founder of Strathclyde University. The tour will also cover the darker side of the graveyard including the grave robbing that was rife in the 19th Century and the measures taken to prevent it happening.
