On 3 October 2026, Tramway in Glasgow will feature Paraorchestra conducted by Charles Hazlewood as part of Sonica Glasgow. The UK's first integrated orchestra of disabled and non-disabled musicians will perform Music for 18 Musicians.
Charles Hazlewood conducts Paraorchestra, the UK’s first integrated orchestra of disabled and non-disabled musicians. To mark the 90th birthday of groundbreaking composer Steve Reich, they will play the glimmering minimalist soundscape that made him a household name: Music for 18 Musicians (1976). Uniquely, Paraorchestra plays in a circle, transforming the orchestra into a sonic installation that audiences are free to explore – moving among pulsing marimbas, pianos and vocals – or to remain still and be suffused in Reich’s sublimely shifting music. As a Registered Charity (number 1163725), Paraorchestra gratefully acknowledges funding from Arts Council England; The Mark Leonard Trust; Esmée Fairbairn Foundation; The Linbury Trust; Garfield Weston Foundation and Bristol City Council.
