About Misty Moon Cider

Misty Moon Cider (www.mistymoon.co.uk) is a small-batch, B Corp certified craft cider business based in Farnham, Surrey. We make our cider from surplus apples rescued from local gardens and orchards - apples that would otherwise go to waste - and turn them into something worth celebrating. This course is our way of sharing that same craft with you, so you can start your own cider and finish it at home, experiencing the whole process for yourself.

The Course

Perfect if you're a cider lover, a curious home brewer, or simply looking for a brilliantly different day out.

What you'll do on the day

Our cider making day takes you through the whole process from apple to demijohn: sorting and preparing the fruit, milling, pressing, and getting your own juice effectively into fermentation:

● Meet your hosts - This course is led by Kathryn Lockett, Founder of Misty Moon Cider, alongside Dr Jill Sudbury, who has been part of the Misty Moon team since inception. Between them, they bring deep, hands-on experience of every stage of the cider making process - from picking and sorting apples to fermentation and beyond - and a shared passion for sharing that craft with others.

● Learn the fundamentals - apple varieties, what makes a good cider apple, and what to avoid

● Sort and prepare the apples - hands-on apple sorting and preparation, ready for milling

● Get stuck in - mill and press the apples by hand, just as cidermakers have for centuries

● Discover the craft - learn about fermentation, yeast, and all other the small decisions that turn apple juice into cider.

●Cider tasting - sample a variety of different ciders to help you discover what you like and inspire the cider you'll make yourself.

● Set up your own demijohn - fill your own 5-litre demijohn (bring one with you, or there will be some to purchase at the training) with freshly pressed juice. By the time you go home, you’ll be all set up to ferment your cider at home over the following weeks

● Optional take-home cider making kit — for an additional cost, you can add a cider making starter kit (fermentation bucket, airlock and rubber stopper, hydrometer), so you can carry on making your own cider at higher quantities.

● Take home Misty Moon Cider — bottles of our own cider included, to enjoy while yours is fermenting

● Enjoy a relaxed lunch — delicious, high quality food and refreshments included throughout

No experience needed. Just bring yourself, wear something you don't mind getting a bit messy, and come ready to learn a skill you'll use and enjoy for years.

Whether you're a curious individual, a cider enthusiast, or a team looking for something a little different for your next away day, this is a genuinely memorable way to spend a day in October.

Practical Information

Our course is hosted at the Rural Life Living Museum in Tilford, near Farnham - a beautiful 15-acre site set within the Surrey Hills, home to over 30 historic buildings and around 40,000 rural artefacts. Farnham is a short (around one hour) train journey from London Waterloo and the Museum is a five minute drive from Fanrham. Parking is available on site. The centre is a working celebration of countryside heritage, from agricultural tools to traditional crafts, and the perfect backdrop for a hands-on day of craft cider making.

We'll be based indoors and out within the museum's site, with woodland and historic barns all part of the backdrop.

It's a characterful rural setting - exactly the kind of place that craft cider making belongs.
