WHAT IS IMAGINARY COMMUNITIES? Imaginary Communities is Chol Theatre’s playful approach to drama, storytelling and creative learning, where children become the creators of the story. Developed alongside children, teachers and community partners over the past 15 years, it puts children’s ideas, imagination and creativity at the heart of their learning. During the workshops, children will work alongside our artists as equal playmakers, using drama, imaginative play and storytelling to discover and shape new worlds together. They might step into character, explore extraordinary places, uncover unknown stories, meet unexpected challenges, make important decisions or invent completely new ideas as they go. Children will move in and out of role, exploring characters, settings and stories through drama, while also drawing on other creative activities and materials along the way. There is no single predetermined story to follow - the children’s ideas help shape what happens next, giving them a real sense of ownership over the creative journey. ABOUT CHOL THEATRE Chol Theatre is a Yorkshire-based theatre company working alongside children, young people and communities to make theatre, tell stories and create meaningful opportunities to imagine, play and learn together. At the heart of our work is a belief that children and young people are creative, capable and full of ideas worth listening to. We create spaces where they can explore those ideas, take creative risks, work collaboratively and have a genuine influence over what they make and what happens next. For more than 15 years, we have developed creative approaches that bring together theatre, drama, storytelling and learning. Our work is rooted in co-creation: rather than arriving with all the answers, our artists work alongside children as fellow playmakers, building ideas, characters, stories and experiences together. This is at the heart of our Imaginary Communities approach. Through our work, we want children and young people to feel powerful, valued and connected - confident that their imagination, ideas and voices can shape the world around them. Come and imagine, create, play and tell stories with us.
