The 'Know Your Numbers' workshop will take place on 6 December 2026 at the Focal Community Centre in Huddersfield. Participants will spend two hours with a GP and a PhD nutritionist, learning about the factors driving diabetes and heart disease, while also discovering their own health metrics. The ticket price is £20.00.
Two hours with a GP and a PhD nutritionist. Learn what really drives diabetes and heart disease — and leave knowing your own numbers.
Ten minutes isn't enough. You already knew that.
You go in with a list of questions. You come out with a prescription and a follow-up in six weeks.
Nobody asked what you actually eat.
Or how you're sleeping.
Or what's keeping you awake at three in the morning.
Nobody asked whether your mother had diabetes, or what happened to your father at fifty-seven.
Not because your GP doesn't care — because the system gives them ten minutes.
This is that missing conversation.
Two hours, on a Sunday morning, in Lindley.
Who's running it
Dr Amina Aliyu Gani — MB;BS, MPH, MRCGP
A GP who left her NHS practice this autumn to do prevention properly. She has a family history of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks, and spent her thirties deciding she wasn't going to inherit it. She now works with people who want the same.
Dr Malgorzata Hirsz, PhD
A nutritionist, epidemiologist and statistician — a BSc in Nutrition, a Master's in Applied Statistics and a PhD in Epidemiology. She has managed a strong family history of type 2 diabetes for thirty years without medication, and her biological age tests roughly twenty years below her actual one. She reads the studies the headlines are based on, and she'll tell you plainly which ones are worth your attention.
What happens in the two hours
Mindset and lifestyle — with Dr Amina
Why knowing what to do has never been the problem. What actually makes a change stick past February. The small number of daily choices that move your risk more than anything in your medicine cabinet.
Food, honestly — with Dr Malgorzata
What's really in the things you buy. Why a glass of orange juice and an orange are not the same thing — and how many oranges go into one glass. Sugar you can see and sugar you can't. What a sustainable way of eating looks like for a real person with a real week.
Your own numbers — both of us
This isn't a lecture you sit through. In the second half, you can have your measurements taken and explained, one-to-one:
Waist circumference — a better predictor of your metabolic risk than your weight
Grip strength — one of the strongest known markers of how well you're ageing
Blood pressure
An optional at-home test measuring the balance of fats in your cells — one of the most useful and least-discussed markers of chronic silent inflammation. Available on the day at a reduced rate if you'd like it
Every measurement is optional. You'll go home with a personal sheet showing your numbers, the healthy ranges for your age and sex, and what they mean.
What you'll leave with
Your own numbers, written down, and an explanation of each one
A clear idea of where your actual risk sits — not a general statistic
One change to make this week. Not twelve
Straight answers to the questions you didn't have time to ask at your last appointment
Tea, coffee, and a conversation with people in the same boat
Who this is for
Adults — men and women — roughly 45 and over who:
Have a family history of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke
Have been told their cholesterol, blood pressure or blood sugar is "borderline"
Are tired of contradictory advice and want it from people who read the research
Would rather prevent something than manage it for thirty years
You do not need to be unwell to come. Most of the people who get the most from this morning feel fine — which is exactly the right time.

One important note
This is preventive education, not a medical consultation. The measurements taken on the day are for your information and are not a diagnosis. Please don't stop or change any prescribed medication on the basis of anything you hear — bring it to your own GP. If anything we measure needs following up, we'll tell you plainly and point you in the right direction.
Don't wait until January
Everyone promises themselves they'll sort their health out in the new year. Very few do, because nothing changes on the first of January except the date.
Come on the 6th of December instead. Bring your questions.
