Shibden Hall, located near Halifax in West Yorkshire, is a Grade II* listed medieval manor house originally built around 1420 for the cloth merchant William Otes. Over the centuries, the estate passed through several hands before being acquired in 1615 by the Lister family, who retained ownership for over 300 years. Its most celebrated resident was the 19th-century industrialist, traveller, and diarist Anne Lister, widely regarded as the "first modern lesbian" and was the inspiration for the BBC's tv show "Gentleman Jack".
Anne extensively transformed the property from a "shabby and cold" state by adding an iconic neo-gothic library tower and beautifully designing the landscape to include terraced gardens and a boating lake. Following the death of the final Lister heir, the hall was handed over to the Halifax Corporation and opened to the public as a museum in 1934, where it stands today as a preserved testament to local heritage and LGBTQ+ history.
Reputed to be one of Yorkshire’s most atmospheric and haunted locations, visitors of Shibden Hall have witnessed many a spectral resident. Most notably is the tormented spirit of Ann Walker, the partner of Anne Lister who is said to haunt the "Red Room", the same very room that she once attempted suicide. Reports of shadowy figures roaming the halls, phantom tobacco smells, a ghostly young girl drowned in the pond, a sinister coachman in the stables and even a spectral cat have been witnessed.
