Explore Hull’s heritage-led regeneration, discovering how historic places are shaping the future of this remarkable city.

Join SAVE and Heritage Network for a tour of Hull, a compact city which punches well above its weight in built heritage. Following a decade of heritage-led regeneration, the northern port city was named one of National Geographic's "Best Places to Travel to in the World" in 2026.

This remarkable accolade is in part inspired by Hull's rich historic environment, which includes one of the country's best-preserved Old Towns, wedged between post-industrial docksides and an abundant Modernist landscape of 1930s civic architecture and post-war rebuilding. Its historic Fruit Market, once dubbed "the Covent Garden of the North", has been creatively reinvented as a thriving hub of galleries, theatres and independent businesses.

Led by Dr Charlotte Tomlinson, this full-day walking tour will explore how Hull is using heritage as a catalyst for regeneration. Discover projects where historic buildings have been saved, adapted and brought back into use through community action, cultural initiatives and creative reuse, and hear more about the people and organisations helping to shape the city's future.

The circular walk will start and finish at Queen Victoria Square, beginning with Hull's city centre and historic core in the morning before heading towards the Fruit Market and former dock areas in the afternoon. Along the route, we will explore some of the city's most significant heritage projects and, where possible, hear from those directly involved in saving and reimagining historic places. The route covers approximately three miles and will take place at a relaxed pace. There will be an independent lunch break of around 45–60 minutes in the historic Trinity Market area.

Charlotte Tomlinson is Development and Outreach Officer for England at the Heritage Network, where she supports community organisations across the country to rescue, repurpose, and manage historic buildings for community benefit. Before joining the Network, Charlotte was a historian of twentieth century Britain and a Project Manager working in heritage-led regeneration. She is from Hull and still calls the city home.
