An Uncomfortable Conversation?
HYBRID SESSSION: ONLINE AND IN-PERSON
This session will begin with a presentation about Helen's published work to date, co-written with people with lived experience of the criminal justice system. This will include a transparent reflection on negotiating the challenges of the collaborative process and the sometimes difficult realities of occupying lived experience spaces as a person without lived experience. This will be followed by a short, structured conversation with Andrew Smith (Lecturer in Modern Slavery) and Simon Green (Director, Wilberforce Institute), reflecting dialogue-driven work they have been undertaking for the past 12 months in which they have explored (with external colleagues) taboos, complicity, status and dangers concerning the positioning of lived experience in social research. Audience members will then be invited to contribute to the conversation via Q&A.
About the speaker
Helen Nichols is a Reader in Criminology. Her research broadly focuses on the impact of prisons on people who live and work within them. Helen's research focuses on the experience and impact of contemporary adult male imprisonment.
She has published a book on the subject and continues to actively research in the field of penology, currently exploring the wellbeing of prison governors.
