About This Event

Solarpunk Trees is a workshop exploring the Solarpunk movement, focusing on speculative fiction, art, and activism. The event will be hosted by activist and artist Sarah Autumn at Hull Central Library on 21 November 2026. Attendance is free.

Explore the speculative fiction, art and activism movement known as Solarpunk with activist and artist Sarah Autumn... and a local tree.

Brighten up a November with a little sunshine...and imagine a greener future for Hull!

To kick of National Tree Week, join artist and creative activist Sarah Autumn for a relaxed, free creative workshop exploring the speculative fiction, art, fashion, and activism movement known as Solarpunk.

Solarpunk seeks to answer and embody the question; "what does a sustainable civilisation look like, and how can we get there? "

We’ll start by looking out at the London Plane tree just outside Hull Central Library, planted more than 100 years ago. From there, we’ll use conversation, writing, storytelling and simple collage to imagine Hull in a Solarpunk future. What might our streets look like? How might we travel, live, grow food and spend time together? And what could we start changing now?

You don’t need to know anything about Solarpunk, and you definitely don’t need to think of yourself as an artist or activist! Just come along to the James Reckitt Room at Hull Central Library with your ideas, curiosity and imagination.

Sarah Autumn is a Yorkshire-based participatory artist and creative activist who explores social justice through art, storytelling and community activity. Her work has included poetry, radio shows, community art workshops, a radical reading room, community festivals and fundraising gigs.

All abilities and levels of experience are welcome. Materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your preferred notebook and pen, or any collaging material. This workshop is aimed at ages 16+, although focused, well-behaved children are welcome to take part when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

You'll leave knowing what Solarpunk is and feel inspired with sustainable ideas for the future of Hull.

If you book on and then find you are no longer able to make it, please cancel your ticket on Eventbrite so we can release the ticket to someone else. Thank you.

This activity has been commissioned by Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth as part of Tree Stories (https://www.hfoe.org.uk/treestories), a creative community nature project funded by the National Lottery Communities Fund.
