Visit restored Fairburn Tower at annual Open Days , 5-6 September 2026 as part of Doors Open Days.

Please do not turn up on the day without a ticket as numbers inside the building are strictly managed for fire safety reasons.

Fairburn Tower is a rare survival from the Scottish Renaissance. Situated in beautiful Highland landscape, half an hour’s drive north-west of Inverness, Fairburn Tower was built around 1545 for Murdo Mackenzie, a favourite at the rich court of King James V and Mary of Guise.

The Landmark Trust are opening this building in association with Doors Open Days. These free open days will be an opportunity to see inside a recent Landmark restoration project and learn more about its history and restoration.

Admission is free and leaflets on the building's history and children's activity sheets will be available on site.

Please note: There is no parking at the property, we have a temporary parking area between the farm and the building (to your right as you approach) there is limited space and you will be directed to your space by a member of our team. Please arrive during your allocated time slot.

Please book a time slot for your arrival. Please note, that we will need to clear the building ready for the next group to arrive, so please arrive earlier in your time slot in order to have the maximum time to explore. Fairburn has steep spiral stairs, so we will also be restricting numbers up and down the stairs and in the rooms, so please arrive together with your group to ensure you can all look around together (max 10 people).

*Fairburn Tower is a small building with a tight spiral staircase so in order to keep visitors safe we will be limiting the number of people allowed in at one time; this could mean that if you arrive at a particularly busy time you may be asked to wait to gain entry.*

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to visit a Landmark for free as part of our Open Day programme, and as such we’re pleased to continue to offer free entry at all our Open Days in 2025.

The Landmark Trust is a building conservation charity that relies on donations to support its work. Over the past 60 years, public support has helped us rescue over 200 historic buildings and make them available for all to experience and enjoy. Your support by attending our events, booking a workshop, and making a donation allows us to continue to save buildings at risk and continue to maintain those already in our care. Your donation could help train the craftspeople needed to restore a future Landmark, offer opportunities for young people to experience history first-hand, or provide a charity with free Landmark stay for their service users through our 50 for Free scheme.
