Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest Mentoring Workshop will occur on 13 October 2027 in Struy, Inverness. Led by Brad Carr and Murray Livingston, the workshop is limited to six participants and has a starting price of £1540.
This event will be led by Brad Carr and Murray Livingston with a maximum of 6 participants. What to Expect: Your tutors for this mentoring workshop in Scotland’s Ancient Caledonian Forest will be Brad Carr and Murray Livingston, both of whom possess a wealth of experience and wisdom from their respective creative journeys. They are two artists with different approaches to photography, both stemming from a deep and unwavering reverence for the natural world. You’re guaranteed not only exceptional guidance and tuition, but also fascinating, thought-provoking conversations, deep dives into the art of photography, and insights into the creative processes of two of the world’s most promising young photographers. While Murray has photographed Scotland for years, Brad’s primary focus has been on his local landscapes and woodlands in Wales. This represents a fantastic opportunity to see how a seasoned photographer approaches a relatively new landscape and to learn from what catches his attention and why. This mentoring workshop will be an exploration of both inner and outer landscapes. Expect not only to develop your practical and technical skills, but also to grow spiritually and psychologically. You will evolve how you think about your own creative vision and come to grips with your personal reasons for creating art via a better understanding of yourself and your place here on earth. Included: - Private tuition for the entire trip - Sole Occupancy accommodation at a Scottish Highlands Hotel - 4.5 days of autumn photography plus 2 x 1.5 hr online calls before & after the workshop - Transfers to/ from Inverness airport/train station - Image reviews & post-processing advice - Breakfasts & packed lunches each day - Evening presentations & facilitation of group discussion - Expert photographic knowledge of locations - All travel to and from locations during workshop days Not Included: - Flights or additional travel costs - Any necessary visas or other travel requirements (please check via your government website) - Evening meals (group reservations are made for the trip at local restaurants & pubs) - Personal & equipment insurance - Gratuities and personal spending Recommended Camera Equipment Packing List: - Backpack (comfortable and tested) - Camera body with manual controls - Wide-angle lens - e.g. 16-35, 14-24 (or crop sensor equivalent) - Mid-range lens - e.g. 24-70, 24-105, 24-120 (or crop sensor equivalent) - Telephoto lens - e.g. 70-200, 70-300, 100-400 (or crop sensor equivalent) - If you are worried about weight, please feel free to slim down your lens choice - Sturdy tripod and head (if you are looking to purchase, send us an email for recommendations) - Full camera batteries, battery charger and empty memory cards - Lens cleaning cloths (you will need a few!) & rocket blower - A small towel to protect your camera from rain - Circular polariser (CPL) plus a range of ND filters - Headlamp - Refillable flask/water carrier - Anything else to make yourself comfortable during long days out photographing nature! Dress for the Conditions: Scotland’s weather is renowned for being a little turbulent. As we head into autumn, it’s likely that temperatures could get quite cold, wet, and windy. It’s therefore essential that you have the right clothing layers and equipment to ensure you’re comfortable in any cold, wet and/or windy conditions that we may deal with. Essential clothing items include: Outdoor clothes (long trousers and top recommended). Warm layers — fleece, down jacket, wind breaker, merino base layers, thick socks, beanie, gloves. Shoes/Hiking boots that are comfortable (well worn in!). Waterproof jacket/hard shell. There are very few areas with reprieve from the rain, besides the vehicle. Good waterproof layers will help immensely! Rain pants plus rain jacket are highly recommended. Food: Breakfast and packed lunches will be included in the hotel booking. Dinner is excluded. We will eat together at the hotel and other local venues in the evenings. Please bring any soft drinks (water bottles plus extras) or snacks (bars, sweet treats, etc.) you may want for personal consumption. A hot drink flask for morning tea/coffee is a good idea too. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please do let us know ahead of time. Transport & Accommodation: This workshop includes all transport between the hotel and locations, and we can also handle transfers to/from Inverness airport and train station. We will leave each morning promptly from the hotel to ensure we arrive on location in good time for first light. A meeting time will be provided each night for the following morning. Please arrive early to ensure we can pack the vehicle for prompt departure. If you are flying into Scotland, it is highly recommended that you arrive at least one day before the workshop’s commencement and leave at least one day after its conclusion. This means that the workshop can remain unaffected by any unforeseen delays or changes that may occur, in which case the workshop will most likely need to go ahead as usual for the sake of the other guests. Accommodation is at the Cnoc Hotel located perfectly between Affric and Strathfarrar, our primary photographic locations for the mentoring workshop. Meeting Point Details: Location: Inverness Airport Carpark and/or train station Time: Morning of 13th October 2027. If you are having difficulty arriving on time, please contact Murray on +44 7808080950 or via email murray.n.livingston@gmail.com & brad@bradcarrphotography.co.uk The workshop will conclude after sunset on the evening of 17 October. Activities to Expect: During the workshop we will access several different woodland locations. Access to these locations may include navigating heathery slopes to reach your desired composition and/or wet and boggy areas where there is the potential to slip. Locations involved include walking on good tracks as well as some very short off-path uneven sections. Our workshop requires a base level of fitness. A cautious assessment of surrounding elements, especially bodies of water and rocks, must be made before positioning yourself for a composition to avoid undesirable risk. We encourage you to know the limits of your own ability, and to invest in appropriate footwear/clothing for such situations if you do not own any already. If you feel accessing a particular location may be beyond your ability, please let us know and we will try to assist. Fatigue Management: As we will be photographing for most of the day, including sunrises and sunsets, you can expect to run into some amount of fatigue over the course of the trip. We have designed this workshop to allow you to enjoy yourself for the full duration to the best of your ability, including some downtime during the day to rest and recover. We will also ensure everyone’s safety and ability to operate at their full creative capacity throughout the workshop. All photo sessions are optional. Should you feel too tired, please let us know, and you are most welcome to rest instead of making photos. Emergencies, Safety and Leave No Trace Policy: For each participant in this workshop, we want to guarantee a safe and fun photographic experience. To help with this, we have completed a three-step risk assessment. This includes examining our photographic venues for hazards that could endanger workshop participants or compromise our ability to enter and exit the area safely. This workshop's risk has been rated as Low because of: - Minor exposure to weather - Bodies of water - Some slippery and uneven footing We may provide a group or an individual with safety instructions at any time. You must always follow these instructions. If the instructions are ignored, we reserve the right to remove non-complying participants from the workshop and further photographic sessions. Before the trip commences we will hold a quick safety briefing to go through our emergency and evacuation procedures with the group. You
