Screening of a documentary film exploring experiences of displacement from Ukraine since February 2022 in Poland, Romania and the UK.

When war forces people to leave home, the journey does not end at the border. Across Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, people displaced from Ukraine and those who welcome them search for belonging, discovering how everyday acts of care can quietly dissolve the borders between strangers.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, millions of people have crossed Europe’s borders in search of safety. Somewhere, After Leaving follows some of their journeys beyond the headlines. Filmed across Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, the documentary brings together the experiences of displaced Ukrainians and the people who opened their homes, institutions and communities to them. Rather than focusing on the moment of escape, the film observes what follows: the slow reconstruction of everyday life, the uncertainty of belonging, and the fragile relationships that emerge between strangers. Combining observational scenes, intimate interviews and reflective narratives, the film asks what it means to leave home - and in what ways it can be reconstructed elsewhere.

Made by Ukrainian filmmaker Svitlana Pohasiy, the film is based on research carried out by academics from Northumbria University - Professor Kathryn Cassidy and colleagues Drs Maria Dubrova and Svitlana Odynets - between 2023 and 2025 as part of an ESRC-funded UK in a Changing Europe project - https://ukandeu.ac.uk/. After the screening there will be Q&A with film-maker Svitlana Pohasiy, Simeon Ewing (Children's Ministry Ukraine) and Professor Kathryn Cassidy.

Doors will open at 5pm with the screening starting at 5.30pm. Refreshments will be served prior to the screening.
