An introductory, in-person workshop at the University of Leeds will take place on 13 October 2026. The session is planned by the WRDTP's Advanced Quantitative Methods team and will be free to attend.
An introductory, in-person workshop at the University of Leeds.
This introductory workshop, planned by the WRDTP’s Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) Training Team and delivered by Dr Peter King from the University of Leeds, will cover the ‘ABCDE’ of survey research:
A: Analysis: we start with the eventual analysis in mind!
B: Build: Items, scales, ordering and general approaches to survey development;
C: Check: Pre-testing approaches and rationale;
D: Deploy: Survey companies, sampling frames;
E: Ethics, data-sharing, open-science sharing of surveys and anonymised response data.
The main part of the workshop will take place from 10:00-12:00, followed by lunch and a networking opportunity until 13:00. The programme will include some discussions and/or group activities.
Outcomes:
Participants will gain knowledge and confidence in questionnaire design, sampling methods, deploying surveys and thinking of survey research projects from start to finish.
Contributors:
Dr Peter King is a Research Fellow in the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, specialising in choice modelling, survey methods, and economic valuation. He currently works on the INFUZE project, designing and analysing longitudinal survey data around real-world car-sharing trials, and has previously led survey and valuation work on the DRUID and RELATE projects. Peter completed his PhD in Economics at the University of Bath and brings extensive practical experience in survey design, from framing research questions through to ethical data sharing.
Prof Jose Pina-Sánchez is Professor in Quantitative Criminology at the University of Leeds, and Director of the Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) for the WRDTP.

This event is open to members of WRDTP partner institutions and other ESRC DTPs.
