About This Event

Cotton Queen will be screened at Hyde Park Picture House on 24 October 2026. The film tells the story of Nafisa, a teenager in a Sudanese cotton-farming village, whose life is disrupted by a businessman’s plans for modernisation. It is the first Sudanese feature directed by a woman, filmed with Sudanese refugees after the production was relocated from Sudan.

Cotton Queen tells the story of Nafisa, a teenager in a remote Sudanese village who listens to her grandmother's tales of resistance. The narrative follows the rhythm of the cotton harvest until a businessman from abroad arrives with plans for modernisation that threaten the community's future and traditions. Shot in Egypt following war forcing production out of Sudan in 2023, this is the first feature film directed by a woman from Sudan.

The project was supported by the Leeds Sudanese Society at the University of Leeds.
