Featuring Lorna Gee AKA Sutara Gayle Carmen Dannyella Dialect Kadijah Ibrahim Kyrann Lara Rose Michelle Scally Clarke Paulette Morris Sistah Joyce Introducing young talent from Music House. We’re particularly pleased to introduce young people from the Remember Oluwale project at Music House. Through a series of creative music workshops, the young people have explored the story of David Oluwale and the idea of “leading the change”. They’ve used music to respond to issues that affected David’s life – including racism, homelessness and mental ill-health – as well as other issues that matter to them today. Nice Up gives them the opportunity to bring the music they have created to the stage, performing alongside established artists and sharing their own voices, ideas and experiences. More than music There’ll be plenty happening around the performances too. Browse the Afrikan Market, enjoy food, poetry and creative activities, or bring younger children along for craft activities and soft play. Nice Up is about bringing generations and communities together through music and creativity – celebrating new talent while creating space to think about the issues that continue to shape our city. The setting has a special significance. Hibiscus Rising was created by internationally renowned artist Yinka Shonibare to honour the life and legacy of David Oluwale, a British-Nigerian man who experienced racism, homelessness and persecution in Leeds before his death in 1969. Today, the sculpture provides a place for people to meet, celebrate and imagine a more welcoming and inclusive city. Come along for an afternoon of music with a message, young talent, creativity and community at one of Leeds’ most striking public artworks. Free – no need to book, just turn up!
