A talk with Dr Florence Renou-Wilson, University College Dublin
Venue: Glenveagh National Park Visitor Centre, Derrylahan, Church Hill, County Donegal, F92 P993
What should Ireland’s peatlands look like in 2050? Achieving a sustainable future for these unique landscapes requires combining rigorous science with local community action. This talk explores the journey toward healthy peatlands in three steps:
1. The evidence (the What): we present key findings from the Peat-Hub-Ireland project and database, providing a multi-disciplinary overview of what we know, and what questions remain, about Irish peatlands.
2. The purpose (the Why): we examine how living peatlands support both nature and society, highlighting their vital ecosystem services: from climate regulation and water management to biodiversity, local economies, and cultural heritage.
3. The roadmap (the How): using the Peatland Recovery Wheel, we outline the necessary framework and actionable steps as well as expected outcomes to restore balance.
Join us to discover how science and community partnership can turn degraded bogs into thriving, resilient landscapes for future generations.
Dr Florence Renou-Wilson is a lecturer and researcher in the School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin and Director of the Masters in Global Change: Ecosystem Science and Policy with Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany. She has investigated peatlands for more than 25 years in an integrative way at the crossroads of ecology, water, climate, forestry, agriculture and other land uses, ultimately providing guidance on sustainable management to a wide range of stakeholders: policy makers, industry, natural resource manager and the general public.
