Title: All Creatures Great and Small

Biography:

Carl Soulsbury is Professor of Animal Ecology in the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Lincoln. He studies how animals and plants grow, reproduce, age and die, and why these life histories differ so much between species. His work spans a wide range of organisms and brings together different research approaches to give new insights into how organisms evolve, behave and live.

Lecture overview:

One hundred years ago, Charles Elton published Animal Ecology, a book that changed how we study the natural world. Natural history had largely been about describing organisms. Elton asked us to look beyond the organism itself, to its wider environment and its interactions with other species, and to how these play out across space and time. A century on, that idea is more important than ever. Understanding how animals live, reproduce and survive means combining scales, from the individual to the population and from a single moment to a lifetime. In his inaugural lecture, Carl Soulsbury explores why bringing these scales together matters, how the methods available to ecologists have transformed, from field notebooks to genomics and tracking technology, and how his own research journey has followed those shifts, across all creatures, great and small.
