You’ll know him from Outlander, Upstart Crow, Paddington and Toast of London. Now, you’re invited to travel along with actor and podcaster Tim Downie as he explores the beautiful and bizarre customs that have shaped British folklore.

Ever wondered where trick-or-treating came from? Or why we have been flocking to stone circles at the Solstice for millenia?

Tim brings to life the mystical stories and present day events that shape the character of our isles. Push through the bramble and briar to embark on a journey through the seasons, encountering wonders from clowns to Straw Jacks, bottle kicking to blazing tar barrels, punkies to soulcakers.

Smell the smoke and feel the rain as you dive into Britain’s folkloric history as never told before, with a sensory exploration of rituals well known and near forgotten. From coast to coast, season to season, Tim collects the stories, songs, dances and strange and wonderful practices that have been handed down over the generations. Filled with insights and stories from the places that keep folklore fires burning year after year, this book is an invitation to step outside and reconnect with the ebb and flow of the world.

Rituals explores how British folklore’s rich tapestry breathes life and power into every season.
