Black History for Black Futures: An Afrofuturist Music & Mixed Media Workshop

Join us at the Victoria Gallery & Museum this October for a special Black History Month event that draws on the past to consider vibrant Black futures. As an antidote to traditional narratives, this immersive creative session offers a relaxing space to explore Afrofuturism through sound, vision, and collage.

The evening opens in the Leggate Theatre with an introduction to the genre by Research Associate Janaya Pickett and Science Fiction Curator Tom Dillon. This is followed by a collaborative, improvised soundscape by Rushworth Composition Prize-winning composer Andrew Barney and multi-disciplinary artist Anna-Louise Loy (BBC Portrait Artist of the Year contestant).

Throughout the event, guests can explore Tate Hall to view our Lightbulb Moments exhibition and specially selected items from our Science Fiction archive. Drawing inspiration from these archives and the live musical backdrop, participants will be invited to create their own thematic mixed-media collages.

Come early to enjoy a drink at the Waterhouse Café from 5pm. No prior musical or artistic experience is required, and all materials will be provided.

Tickets are free but spaces are limited, so booking is essential.
