About This Event

The workshop 'Developing Appropriate Speed. Staying Safe, Staying in Control' is set for 26 February 2027 at Knowsley Inn and Lounge. This session aims to clarify the often misunderstood aspects of speed in driving.

This workshop helps you understand how speed is one of the most misunderstood elements of driving.

Speed is one of the most misunderstood elements of driving — and one of the most influential. Too fast creates danger. Too slow creates risk. The real skill lies in teaching learners how to judge appropriate speed using concentration, observation, anticipation, space, and time.

This workshop explores how instructors can help tomorrow’s drivers stay safe, stay aware, and stay in control. You’ll also look at the real penalties of speeding, how to teach rural driving effectively, and how the ABC of good driving underpins every safe decision on the road.

Written by Kathy Higgins Dip DI. F Inst MTD and Leanne Condliff DVSA ADI (Grade A), this session gives you practical tools to help learners understand speed — not fear it, misuse it, or ignore it.

What You’ll Explore

· When speed is wrong — recognising inappropriate speed and teaching learners to self‑correct.

· Too slow — is it ever too slow? — understanding how hesitation and under‑speed create risk.

· Staying safe through awareness — using concentration, observation, anticipation, space, and time.

· The real penalties of speeding — what learners need to know beyond the basics.

· Staying in control — helping pupils judge speed confidently in changing environments.

· Teaching rural driving — managing bends, crests, hidden hazards, and variable limits.

· The ABC of good driving — how Attitude, Behaviour, and Control shape safe speed choices.

Who This Workshop Is For

· PDIs preparing for Part 3 or entering the industry.

· ADIs wanting to strengthen their teaching around speed, safety, and rural driving.

· Trainers and mentors aiming to improve learner decision‑making and hazard awareness.
