Experience the real history behind the play, featuring original recorded interviews with Huyton ex-POWs & archive photos

Join us for an exclusive, FREE documentary film screening celebrating a remarkable, true piece of post-WWII Merseyside history.

In May 1946, German prisoners of war arrived at Camp 111 situated on the King George V playing fields in Huyton. Among them was future Manchester City footballing legend Bert Trautmann, discovered playing on the camp pitch.

What followed was an extraordinary, heartwarming story of love and reconciliation: three young German soldiers—Rolf Rheinlander, Eric Kirste, and Frederick Kooper—met local Liverpool women Jean, Eleanor, and Minnette. Against all odds, the men married, settled locally, and became an enduring, beloved part of the Merseyside community.

Playwright Mike Howl met the original ex-prisoners and their families to record their personal memories and preserve their living history. This special documentary film combines those authentic, recorded audio interviews with rare historical archive photographs.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Documentary Screening: Listen to the original recorded voices of the soldiers and their families sharing their personal memories.

Archive Imagery: Rare photos depicting post-war Huyton, Camp 111, and the local couples.

Community Gathering: A nostalgic, moving evening of local oral history in the heart of Hope Street.
