Talk and guided tour hosted by Everton Library Trust
A special event for Merseyside Civic Society members and friends – part of our Liverpool North Campaign.
Built in 1896 by Thomas Shelmerdine, Everton Library is a Grade II listed building celebrated for its Jacobean and Arts and Crafts architecture. Known as the “Jewel on the Hill,” it features a turret, glass-vaulted ceiling, and ornate ironwork, reflecting Liverpool’s rich civic heritage and early public library movement.
The building has undergone significant decline and decay over the last 20 years. However in 2025, Liverpool City Council announced a £250K programme of remedial and improvement works which will ensure the building could return to use as a cultural and community asset.
Attendees will hear about the work of Everton Library Trust (http://www.evertonlibrarytrust.org/), and their current work on the future community use of the building supported by the Architectural Heritage Fund.
There will be a guided tour of the exterior of the library and the opportunity to see inside using virtual reality.
Tea and coffee will be available upon arrival.
