COMING OF AGE ON THE DANCEFLOOR!

Part of the BFI Film Audience Network's nationwide Rip It Up programme celebrating British youth culture on screen, Paraphysis Cinema presents Northern Soul!

Set in Lancashire in 1974, the film follows Matt and John as they leave behind a humdrum life of youth clubs and factory lines to chase a dream of travelling to the US, unearthing unknown soul 45s and becoming top DJs on the Northern Soul scene. Their dance- and amphetamine-fuelled quest brings them into contact with some of the darker elements of the movement and tests their friendship to its limits.

Elaine Constantine's coming-of-age drama is more than a story about the scene; it captures the dancefloor as a place of self-discovery and possibility — a space where working-class identity can reinvent itself, where young people can imagine lives beyond those laid out for them.
