Across Seas, Across Archives: methods of community archiving with the An Việt Archives & Gor Hai collection.

Cường Minh Bá Phạm will lead a community archiving workshop with materials from the An Việt Archives (AVA) and the Gor Hai collection.

The AVA is a community archive that come from the An Việt Foundation (AVF) which was founded in the 1980s to support thousands of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian refugees. The materials of AVA is currently based at Hackney Archives and is the largest known collection of materials relating to the British-Vietnamese community experience.

The 'Gor Hoi - Crossing the Water' collection held at Tower Hamlets Archive was a multimedia performance project with Chinese and Vietnamese communities which took place during the London International Festival of Theatre in 1987.

The workshop will touch upon the following concerns: how can we think about institutional and community archiving? Whose stories and versions are prioritised?

And what are the methods and tools can we use to remember the past? Using these questions as a guide, participants will also be introduced to community archiving methods developed by the An Việt Archives to engage with the AVA and Gor Hai materials.

Participants should be POCs who are interested in decolonial methods of community archiving.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants (please note sign up is a must).
