How the news industry is dealing with generative AI.Guest speaker: Nic Newman, Senior Research Associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University,Principal organiser and chair: Ursula Smartt, Associate Professor of Law and Legal Careers Counsellor Nic Newman is a high profile journalist and founding member of the BBC News website, jointly with Editor in Chief, Mike Smartt OBE. He is Senior Research Associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, where has been the lead author of the annual Digital News Report (2012-2025), the world’s largest on-going study of consumer behaviour around news. He also authors an influential annual report on media and technology trends and has published recent research on news creators and the rise of video podcasts. Most recently he led digital teams, developing websites, mobile and interactive TV applications for News, Sport, Weather and Local. Nic has also published a range of audience and industry research about the impact of Artificial Intelligence on journalism. He has played an important part in the development of social media strategies and guidelines for the wider BBC: https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/people/nic-newmanOpen to all NU London students, faculty, staff and alumni. This session will touch on AI in general, agentic AI, and how this impacts on all social media and particularly news journalism. General themes will include: • Disruption and Adoption: How the news industry is dealing with generative AI• AI and the rise of human creators and agentic AI• How journalism needs to change in the era of AI and news creators• The changing formats of news, the rise of social media and AI
