Dr Henry Legg from St Andrews delivers a talk at the Huxley Building, South Kensington Campus, examining whether chiral planetary edge states possess a similar level of protection to quantum Hall edge states. The presentation investigates whether the ocean has a sea in the absence of a chiral anomaly.
Speaker: Dr Henry Legg (St Andrews) Abstract: Chiral edge states in the quantum Hall effect are protected by a chiral anomaly, which physically is spectral flow through a filled Dirac sea. I will investigate whether chiral planetary edge states, namely the Kelvin wave, possess a similar level of protection to quantum Hall edge states. An important conclusion will be that, unlike the quantum Hall case, the ocean does not have a sea. My findings may – but probably do not – have relevance to understanding the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. https://legg.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/
