About This Event

Bard in the Bookshop presents: Macbeth Where: Waterstones Gower Street, Europe’s largest bookshop When: on Halloween - Saturday 31 October, 3.30pm & 7pm, Sunday 1st November, 1pm Bard in the Bookshop is a project launched by Victoria Gartner, the Artistic Director of Will & Co, and Waterstones Gower Street. A growing rep company with the ambition to perform all of Shakespeare’s plays in between the aisles of a working bookshop, we bring you Macbeth on Halloween with a witchy cast of 13 actors and a few surprises! ‘The best thing about the night is seeing everybody on sixteen hours of Shakespearean rehearsal delivering extraordinary performances using their wit and imagination and it being coordinated in a completely coherent manner by director Victoria Gartner to make something incredibly inspiring and entertaining. Don’t miss it!’ Michael Maloney, patron of Bard in the Bookshop Bard in the Bookshop – Macbeth’s cast of 13: Luke Farrugia, Zora Owen, Laolu Awogbade, Kerill Kelly, Risha Silvera, Ronan Kelly, Janhavi Shivalkar, Nadia Nadif, Tommy Tancock, Taylor Carmen, Zacchaeus Kayode, Chase Studinski and Ella Boyes Bard in the Bookshop started from two impulses: Michael Korel’s dream to have theatre in Waterstones Gower Street in order to surprise and delight book lovers and Victoria Gartner’s knowledge that many actors feel deprived of places to flex their creative muscles. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to combine both: a lab of the imagination within the aisles of Europe’s biggest bookshop. Both instincts paid off. What started with a 9-actor Romeo and Juliet and a modest audience of some thirty curious book-buyers has now grown to a 98-actor-strong rep company, over 600 audience members so far and the ambition to perform all of Shakespeare’s play in the bookshop. Thanks to the success of the last two shows, sold-out A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Antony & Cleopatra (short film here), Bard in the Bookshop – Macbeth will offer audiences 3 promenade of Shakespeare’s bloodiest and witchiest play on Samhain (or Halloween), when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest. A witchy cast of 13 actors will lead you through the gothic maze of a building that is Waterstones Gower Street and, for the first time, we are also using lighting to bring the story to life.
