Cult-comedy-classic Human Traffic, with live music from atmospheric electronic trio Domina, part of BFI's 'Rip it Up'

Part of the BFI's "Rip it Up" season, Theatreship is proud to host a series of screenings celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion. In this season we dive into the youth driven movements which have defined our cultural identity, the agonies and ecstasies of growing up in Britain, and the issues facing the next generation. For this event we are screening Human Traffic, a euphoric and hilariously authentic plunge into 90s UK rave culture, followed by a live performance from Domina, bringing their minimalist, dreamlike synth-driven sound and atmospheric vocals.

Human Traffic

Rating: 18

Duration: 99 minutes

Cast: John Simm, Lorraine Pilkington, Shaun Parkes, Nicola Reynolds, Danny Dyer

Human Traffic (1999) Directed by Justin Kerrigan, this definitive British cult comedy-drama chronicles the chaotic, ecstasy-fueled weekend of five twenty-something friends in Cardiff as they desperately escape the soul-crushing monotony of their dead-end, nine-to-five jobs. From the iconic rallying cry that "the weekend has landed" through the frantic preparations, the pumping underground club scenes, the drug-induced epiphanies, and the inevitable paranoia of the Sunday comedown, the film serves as a vibrant, fast-paced time capsule of a generation living entirely for the weekend. Capturing the authentic highs and lows of 90s UK club culture, it beautifully distills a youth movement built on pounding basslines, transient euphoria, and an unbreakable sense of chosen family.

The film will be followed by a live performance from Domina, a London electronic trio. Their sound features minimalist, dreamlike synth-driven music layered with atmospheric vocals.
