In-house event with presentations from the contributors of 'Talking about non-recent child sexual abuse'.
The Freud Museum London is pleased to host this evening event to mark the publication of 'Talking about non-recent child sexual abuse: survivor, clinician and researcher perspectives'.
Judith Herman emphasizes that without an organized political movement, society’s natural response to atrocities is denial, silence and disavowal. The origins of this book are linked to the discoveries of the atrocities inflicted by Jimmy Savile which came to public attention in 2011. Police operations, Media reviews and NHS inquiries followed and subsequently the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual abuse was the definitive state response, set up in 2014. Many of the book contributors had been working in this area within various fields for a long time but these events prompted Danny Taggart and Jo Stubley to create a small group, subsequently named the Network for Change: NRCSA. This is an ethical and political stance, holding a belief that this is not a subject that can or should be confined to the clinical arena, but has legal, welfare and profound social implications. The book brings together the different voices of the network, as well as other collaborators. It has a number of contributors who bring a psychoanalytic focus and this feels particularly important in relation to the history of psychoanalysis and Freud’s relinquishment of the so-called seduction theory.
The event will have four of the chapter contributors on a panel, each bringing their own perspective on this topic, with encouragement for an open and authentic dialogue with the audience. The panel presenters are Danny Taggart, Sara Scott, Louise Allnutt and Michael May and the event will be chaired by Jo Stubley.
