Join curator Amy Jones for an intro to Studio Voltaire’s new solo exhibitions by artists Katherine Hubbard and Bill Walton
Amy Jones, Curator (Exhibitions) leads introductions to Katherine Hubbard, The Great Room and Bill Walton, A Form of Honesty, providing insight into the work of both artists and the development of the two exhibitions.
Katherine Hubbard, The Great Room
For her first solo institutional exhibition outside the US, Hubbard presents her largest photography and sculptural installation to date. The artist has transformed the gallery at Studio Voltaire into a labyrinth that references the partition wall used to turn ‘the Great Room’ of her mother’s Philadelphia home into a makeshift bedroom. With her intimate portraits, Hubbard explores the shifting relationship between mother and daughter, photographer and subject, to reflect on experiences of grief, visibility and illness.
Bill Walton, A Form of Honesty
Also the artist’s first solo institutional exhibition, Studio Voltaire presents a number of Walton’s surprising and sentimental works from across his sculptural practice. Assemblages of lead, wood, copper, glass, concrete and textile illuminate Walton’s view that materials in his work remained in flux, subject to change both in their making and in their encounter with the viewer. Through the formal language of minimalism, the exhibition showcases Walton’s clever illusions that obscure and reveal the world around us by subtly playing with perception, artifice and material truth.
