Synopsis: 'Dear Daughters, Dear Sisters’ is created by Dr. Hiya Deb, Dr. Debanjali Biswas and ensemble. It explores themes of migration, memories and intergenerational loss. It focuses on the time of Partitions in the Indian subcontinent. Told through the format of letters, this performance stems from the words exchanged by two sisters. They trace their lives across West Bengal, Bangladesh and London. The histories of displacement intersect with narratives of family, love and survival. As younger generations discover their stories, many questions arise. They begin to understand the socio-political histories woven through personal memories. They wonder -what is remembered, what remains unspoken, and what is inherited across generations? This performance uses movement, music, and spoken word. This structured storytelling creates a space for Bengali cultural memory and collective history to come to life. It invites the audience to reflect on how women preserve memories. It queries how they inherit trauma. It asks how they pass on stories of home, separation and resilience to their daughters and granddaughters.
About the artists: Dr. Hiya Deb is a filmmaker, researcher, educator and multidisciplinary artist. Her work explores memory, displacement, caste, gender and underrepresented histories. She uses documentary and practice-based research. She holds a PhD in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research examined Dalit refugee narratives and Transgenerational trauma through creative documentary practice.
Dr Debanjali Biswas is an anthropologist of performance cultures and creative industries. She is also a Manipuri practitioner and a performance-maker. Her work critically examines entangled artworlds of South Asia. She is interested in marginality, precarity and resistance.
